I have no doubt that at one time Final cut 4 was a great product. But beware to those that have new Mac's with Intel chips. This version simply does not work on them. I bought a brand new mac book pro with the intel chip and this program did not work. Luckily I did not spend that much and was able to get a refund. Save Bias Peak LE 6, Single
Great functionality for a basic audio editor. All the function and none of the fluff. It works well in Leopard. My only gripe was the error messages sent to the user don't explain what I'm doing wrong in the software. Once you figure the work around for the issues everything moves very seamlessly. When I worked more on PC I used Sonic Foundry for the majority of my creative audio work. Now on a Mac, Peak has been the best on that Platform.

Cheapest Steinberg WaveLab Essential 6
I use it for business editing of my talks and my podcast! Well worth the money!
It comes with a starter manual. I also recommend printing out the main manual on PDF in a notebook for reference
A lot of features for the money. It also has a upload podcast feature that is standard and saves files as MP3 standard as well.
I started from scratch with no editing skills and the more I work with it the more I like it. Anything new takes time to learn but this becomes easier as you go along as all well designed products do.
To me the best value for a well designed, stable program .. especially for podcasting. You can hear it's application on my podcast, InquireOnLine.info

Cheap Windvd 4 Plus By Intervideo

This product is really the best Software DVD play I haver tried. I have tried all the ones I could find available on the net and this one was the best. It offers many items I was looking for with so much ease it was hard to turn it down. It offers background watching, by this I mean that your desktop turns into the screen and your windows float on top. It also offers instant screen capture, a difficult feature to find. Overall a great buy.Get more detail about Windvd 4 Plus By Intervideo.
Buying Video Deluxe
It sounds extreme, but in my opinion, this program is terrible. I got it for $$ and now I am trying to get my money back. In the reviews it sounds very good. I used it on a Window 2000 computer with 768 meg. of memory and an 80 gig hard drive with an AMD 1.3 ghz processor and a NVidia TNT2 32 meg. video card. My regular job is as a Computer Support Specialist and Programmer so I work with - many programs. Here's my experience that supports the poor rating I give the program...
= Right after the installation of the program, it automatically starts up the Video Deluxe program. When it did, immediately it came up with an "Error loading audiovis.dll" message. The program did continue to load. Twice when I subsequently started the program, that error message occurred. What effects it has in using the program I don't know.
= Twice when I exported a movie using QuickTime Movie Export with all default settings except sound set to 11k and Mono, the Video Deluxe froze up the computer an hour into the render. I gave up. (Note - I have 25+ other major software programs on this machine that I've used for a year and they work fine..
= When you are Exporting (rendering), which can take 9 hours like it did to an .AVI file, there is no dialog to Cancel it once it begins. When I did ESC to stop an export, the Video Deluxe froze up and in the Win 2k - Task Manager it said "Program not Responding" and I had to crash the program to stop it.
= The Help in the program is terrible. For instance, when I went to do an Export, a dialog popped up asking if I wanted to export a range or the whole movie. In Help, there is no data at all on how to set a Range. At times the Help came up in German, not English.
= I finally dug up some info that - inferred indirectly - on how to set a Range when I looked in help on info about the "Edit Menu". I used the info to set a Beginning Marker and End Marker per their directions. I even tested the settings by using Zoom to Range between Beginning and End markers, and the program - did - zoom to the range I setup. But then when I used the Edit Menu - Range Extract which Help says will delete everything in the video - except - the range, Video Deluxe did the opposite. It removed the range I wanted to keep instead and kept the rest of the movie.
I could go on about other things that were disappointing in the 3+ hours I wasted on the program (like how their Tutorial video is so distorted when it plays, you cannot even read it's screen examples).
My job is working with software 50-60 hours a week and the 3+ hours I spent repeatedly trying to use this program to perform the simple tasks I purchased it for, were wasted. The program might have been conceived of by a genius, but it was implemented by poor design and bugs.Get more detail about Video Deluxe.

Buy Corel MediaOne Plus
I purchased this product primarily for the function of being able to freeze still photos from video clips. Everything else seemed to work with the program EXCEPT that particular function. I tried emailing the company several times to get assistance, and nobody would respond. They offer some kind of technical support, but you have to PAY FOR IT!! I have been really frustrated with this particular program not having technical support available. With the particular function I wanted to use, I'd go through the steps, and it just wouldn't work. Other simple photo funtions seem to work just fine. In my case, this was a waste of money, and you are definately ON YOUR OWN once you buy it.Get more detail about Corel MediaOne Plus.
Purchase Disc Cover
I've purchased many a software package over the years, but this has got to be the absolute worst one of all. It is NOT user friendly. It is NOT intuitive, and the instructions are very poor. I have Disc Cover 2, and had to buy the upgrade in order to have any functionality at all. Then, after spending many hours in trying to set it up to print a CD label, I still have not been able to create one. I have been in constant email contact with the company that wrote the software, and they have been responsive but it has been like pulling teeth. They answer one question, but don't tell you what the next step needs to be. Then you have to ask them for that, and so on and so on. Please save yourself the money and aggravation and buy some other software, or try downloading a free one off the internet - you could not do any worse than this one.Get more detail about Disc Cover.

Order Dance 5 - eJay
Dance 5 is a music program preloaded with sound loops that you would normally put together along with other loops to create a track. This program is mainly focused on dance and techno beats but you can also make up your own beats within the program. Shop For Submersible Music Drumcore 3
Drumcore 3 does have good potential for finding a drum groove and coupling it with a customized drumkit - looking for your own sound. However, in my 3 decades of dealing with computers, this is the single most unprofessional release of a commercial product I have ever seen. Too much technical detail to enumerate, sorry. It is still usable so I am giving it 2 stars, but in its current state, its worth $50, not $200. On the bright side, it is under new management, so perhaps they will give it a re-write. IMHO, they should be giving this thing away free, with apologies for the defects, then ask for your money when its been fixed.Get more detail about Submersible Music Drumcore 3.

Native Instruments FM8 Soft Synth,¹ This instant
I was lucky and bought this rig for 99 bucks on special. I was not disappointed. I used to own an old DX-21 (cut down version of DX-7), and I'm very happy with the software emulation.
But one caveat - you have to have a good knowledge of of FM synthesis. If you don't have that yet, please try to master it. The manual is pretty good, but not perfect. The menu layout and flow plan of the synth is about as straightforward and practical as you can get. I never had any hardware issues with it, except you have to install the ASIO sound drivers if you want to run it in standalone. If you have studio software and run it as a VST, it should work fine.
Anyway, the biggest pleasure is playing all the hundreds of patches from great sound software engineers and modifying them. The arppegiator is outstanding. If you want an FM synth at a great price, look no further.
By the way, if you want great legacy analogue synths, like the old Moog Modular, or the old Yamaha CS-80, or other great legacy synths, go to Arturia. But my bias goes to Native Instruments. Their customer service is great, and their instruments are fantastic.
Cheers
TJ

ACID Pro 6 [OLD VERSION] Immediately
First off, I use Vista on a NASA style computer.
The Media Manager and "What's This?" Help program, doesn't operate using Vista.
But let me tell you, Acid Pro 6 is everything you need. Combined with Acid Pro Power! (the official guide), and the manual that's supplied with the Acid program, there's no need for Help files. Granted, the Media Manager is missed, but you can create folders with windows explorer to sort your loop and save catagories. In other words, Media Manager doesn't even have anything to do with the artistic use of Acid Pro and the creative process. In NO WAY does it hinder any of the Acid programs powerful abilities!
As a Home "recordist", I used to need to hook up a drum machine, keyboard, and many other tedius processes involving cables, living room "real estate" and clutter, just to separately record background tracks into my Roland digital recording console. Then into my computer to burn the CD. Now everything is in the computer! And this is one program you can play around with for hours, non-destructive 24 bit editing! Fooling around with different beats and modes, in seconds! EASY!
Later after creating balanced background tracks, vocals and solo instrumentals can be recorded as easily as the ol' multitrack tape recorders! With as many "Takes" as it takes! Even mixing the best sections of each performance to perfection. Again in only seconds! No re-routing this and that. As easy as painting the music on the computer screen.
I've been able to do all of this by just playing around and experimenting. That's how easy it is. Of course I've used multitrack tape recorders long ago, but the program just makes sense without alot of learning curve. Now, I got the Acid Pro 6 Power Book! What the future holds.....

Adobe Premiere 7.0 Professional Best Quality
Premiere Pro 7 has quite a few problems, which is a pain in the but.
1: Import video problems. It does NOT support as many video types as I like. I do not use exotic videos, but come on, .mp4 .avi is NOT supported, regardless what is in the .avi file, or the fact I can change the extension of the .mp4 to .mpg and it works fine.
2: Import audio problems. It clips and distorts most audio types I use including .mp3's . Only file type it does not mess up is .wav
3: Export video problems. No matter how I export it, compressed or not, it seems it never exports the same quality as the imported videos I use to make the clip. It always overexposes or under exposes them . Some times it pixilates and blurs the video so bad, it's unusable.
4: Export video's audio. The audio in exported videos seems amplified greatly from what I hear in the editing.
5: Export video size. I use the exact same export codecs as windows movie maker, and Premier Pro produces larger and worse quality videos than WMM does with same materials.Get more detail about Adobe Premiere 7.0 Professional.
Cakewalk SONAR Home Studio 6 XL Get it now!
Just a mess of gismos with minimal logic and too few quality features. Midi systems did not interface easily or as expected. Never did get around to my audio interface...frustrated. Lowest Price WinDVD 9
I love WINDVD 9, I bought a new computer years back and it came loaded with WINDVD Gold in its programs.
In the WINDVD Gold I learned that one can "capture frames" off videos and I was hooked forever.
You see, I am an ultra huge lifer Johnny Mathis fan thus I can play all my hundreds of Mathis DVD's I own of him through many years and capture wondrous photos of him to save in an external hard drive, print them out if I wish, use them on mailing labels, and send them to friends etc; I've performed each to my delight and to the delight of all recipients!
The quality of WINDVD 9 is perfect for my new 64 bit ultra perks included PC, the videos are as clearly perfect as possibly can be. It's quality is far better with my PC Video card than playing videos on my HDTV's.
I try to purchase all my program needs of this sort from amazon.com when I can find them these days and not from Corel that owns WIINDVD's and many other programs that I love to use from Corel. First; WINDVD 9 was less expensive on amazon.com than from Corel. Second; Corel has cheated me out of so much money from online downloads it's unreal. When one downloads a trial version from Corel etc, of course, it's not the full program. Usually they do not run properly so then one wishes to upgrade to the full version then alas the purchased key codes for full versions never have worked!
Corel and I go back and forth, back and forth in emails' after emails and many times on the telephone and their rhetoric is always the same instructions. Finally when I ask for a full refund; no one can believe what one has to do for a refund. They have no problem taking my money rapidly but it is nearly impossible to get my refund back into my bank account without hassles galore and it takes weeks!
One has to sign an affidavit that the item in not still in the PC being used (as if they couldn't tell that on their own merit) sign it then send it by FAX with a whole load of other legalese paperwork to somewhere in Canada of all places to have to FAX along with all the other hassles!
This seems like it's not a an Amazon compliment but it is. Your return policies beat all anywhere and so do your products you guarantee and stand behind them 100% for satisfaction with every purchase from you! But it is not a compliment to Corel help and support and or for refunds with a bad product or useless key code.
I give Corel an "F" in help and support but a "B" if I can find their programs from retail outlets or Amazon online. No more online downloads for me!
I try amazon.com first for my needs/wants first.
Know that WINDVD9 is a winner but do yourself a favor and purchase it where you know you can return easily or you might need to think twice or thrice.

Low Price Intervideo WinDVD 8 Gold [OLD VERSION]
WinDVD 8 has many problems on Windows Vista despite claims by its maker that it is compatible. If you run Vista, do not buy WinDVD.
You will find that the boxed retail version crashes when playing mpeg files. The download version behaves differently but fails to play audio when playing MPEG files (as opposed to DVDs).
Support from Corel/Ulead/Intervideo effectively does not exist. The software patch available from Corel fails to install properly. Also, they will not honor returns on the retail product.
If you still want to try this product, definitely do not buy the retail version. They offer a free trial download. Maybe it will work better for you. As for me, money down the drain.Get more detail about Intervideo WinDVD 8 Gold [OLD VERSION].

I think this program is overly complex and tries too hard to conform to the paper/cel animation process. Purchase Movie Edit Pro Twelve [OLD VERSION]
This review is a little late, but here it is. I have used this for over a year. I pretty much learned how to use it by playing around with it. The tutorial was ok for a small portion, but alot was still to be discovered. I had problems at first with some crashes and freezes, but now I never get a crash or freeze. Another words, when you use it correctly it works for you. I combine videos, photos & music with ease. There are lots of options for titles, fonts, colors, fades, transitions & more. I am still learning because there are so many options to toy with. Mostly that is determined by how much time you want to put into each video. Fast and quick or really nice editing with lots of flare?
I use standard video(sony dvr108), photo(Fujifilm f60) and music(MP3). I am growing into HD, perhaps tomorrow?
This is a good and stable product, I love it.Get more detail about Movie Edit Pro Twelve [OLD VERSION].
Order Toontrack Jazz EZX Expansion Pack for EZdrummer Sample Library
Yes, there are things that sampled drums can't do that a real drummer, especially a jazz drummer, can with his eyes closed. But the gap is closing thanks to this sample set. It's frightening how real these drums sound. Then again with Futureman involved in this project, I expected nothing less than something stunning. Toontrack delivered in a big way. These drums sound phenomenal and there are an ungodly amount of samples and drumming techniques involved. The quality is crystal clear as well.
This product was on sale for $39, which was more than 50% off. Even at full price, it's worth every penny.

Cosmi 6000 Sound Effects
I am very disappointed with this collection of sound clips. Most are short, of low quality, and contain a lot of hiss or other noise. Many of the sounds are not isolated, as if they were lifted from a TV show and you can hear other sounds in the background. Some are not really sound effects, just someone speaking gibberish. You can only export the sounds as WAV files, and you can only export them one at a time, which makes it extremely tedious to add these sound effects to your project or your own sound organizer, like iTunes. You must keep the CD in the computer to access the sounds, which again makes it cumbersome to use. The search and play interface is terrible and very amateurish, like it was written by a high-school student on a weekend. The only positive I can say is that it does contain a wide variety of sounds.Get more detail about Cosmi 6000 Sound Effects.
Native Instruments Akoustik Piano: Sample Based Acoustic Piano Review
Bought these grand pianos after reading several favorable reviews for around $75 which i think was a real bargain, especially as they were currently being repackaged and sold individually for a lot more by the software makers.
The pianos are a mixed bag but it was worth it just to get the Steinway D which is a beautiful overall sound.
The Bechstein D is outstanding in the two octaves above middle C and really sounds like a Bechstein here, especially if you are playing fancy Liberace style arrangements. But it's weaker outside of this range.
The upright piano and 3rd grand are OK but nothing special and will get far less use.
The inbuilt reverbs are ok too.
The software is pretty heavy on CPU use. It opens up offering 50 voices but frequently I will drop it down to 40 or less to avoid audio pops. And I don't notice any notes not sounding or cutting off too soon as a result. There is a nice damper pedal sample too for authenticity - just gives you that ultra soft strings ring as the pedal is released.
Previously I was using the grand pianos provided by Reason software which come with the Reason program, and I still use them - as different types of Grand sound suit different songs.
But in conclusion to obtain a very good representation of a grand piano for $75 is well worth the money.Get more detail about Native Instruments Akoustik Piano: Sample Based Acoustic Piano.

CAKEWALK Dimension Pro Virtual Synthesizer Win/Mac Top Quality
Its packed with lots of sounds in all categories.
I myself would like more woodwind to choose from.
Overall its an ok program with all kind of orchestral sound (+ synths)
But what I found very bad was the looping of the samples!
You can clearly hear a sample being looped when holding the note.. sounded just like the sample was looping in 1993 with Soundtrakcer on an Amiga.
I excpect much more quality from this VST instrument than this.
SO now again, I am searching after a better orchestral VST packacge for my Cubase.

MusEdit - PC This instant
Music input in Musedit is very fast and user-friendly once you have acquired the necessary skills - the experienced user can bypass the menus and use keyboard shortcuts and toolbar buttons for the most common operations. But for the beginner there is a variety of input methods available (a virtual keyboard or fretboard or toolbar on the screen, or an external MIDI keyboard)
Musedit is ideal for guitarist and other string players since it supports any instrument tuning and number of strings (from 2-8). You can input the notation into Tablature or Music staff or a combination of the two (linked staff/Tab). Musedit allows at least 4 parts per staff and can handle music at all levels from beginner to virtuoso.
All styles of guitar playing are supported - classical, electric, jazz, folk etc. Musedit also supports banjos, mandolins, dulcimers, bazoukis, chapman sticks etc etc.
Musedit can also be used to notate songs, band / ensemble /orchestral parts, drum and percussion parts, vocal scores etc. You can have up to 20 parts in a score (a part can be a text line, staff, Tab line etc).
The user has control over every element of the score (to the nearest pixel!) and this allows high quality printed output. Export of all or part of the score as a graphic is also possible for putting on websites etc.
Contrary to the report below, I have found the latest version of Musedit to be very stable in operation (on Win XP and Win 98). Also I had no problems translating guitar parts into Tablature.
Most of the bugs that afflicted early versions have been ironed out; There is still room for improvement in a few areas, but overall the current version does a good job.
However technical support is not of the best. And it has been a year since the developer released the last version and still no update!
However despite a few grumbles, Musedit is still probably one of the best scoring programs available for guitarists and other stringed instrument players.Get more detail about MusEdit - PC.

AudioStation 5.0 Buy Now
I own a copy of Audiostation 5,(actually the version I have is 5.2), and it works as advertised. I can't speak for the other people who reviewed this software, perhaps they have a different version, but I have never experienced a single problem with Audiostation 5 (ver.5.2). Loading the software was a breeze and using it was just as easy. It rips tracks from my cd player to my harddrive flawlessly and I've never had the software crash either during a download or during the software installation process. I'll lay 10 to 1 odds that the other people that reviewed this product either have hardware that conflicts with Audiostation software or they are, how shall I say...RETARDED!!! This software does everything it advertises and it has performed without a hitch for me. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the software does NOT allow you to transfer your downloaded mp3 tracks to a portable device ie. a portable mp3 player. That being said, it's still a great piece of software, one of the best I've ever used for what it claims to be able to do. As far as the tranferring of mp3 files to a portable mp3 player, that's more of a wish on my part since the software doesn't claim to be able to do that, however I think that Audiostation 6 will transfer mp3's to portable devices. I highly endorse Audiostation (version 5.2)Get more detail about AudioStation 5.0.

Blaze Dvd Copy / Turbo Backup Order Now
I Bought "Blaze Dvd Copy" just to make backup copies of my dvd movies but it says that it can't make them because of the copyright on them.
this product says right on it "makes backup copies of all your favorite dvd movies",but it was just a waste of money.
I had to give it at least 1 star but wouldn't even give it that.

PressIt CD Labeling System Decide Now
I bought this really for the software - but it simply doesn't work. After one day I haven't yet been able to print a label! It's slow, it hangs and it crashes - it's bad. If you're using an Apple Intel - don't even bother.Get more detail about PressIt CD Labeling System.

TASCAM CDGT1 Portable CD Guitar Trainer Right now
I bought this because I was tired of having to sit in front of my stereo system while learning songs. This seemed like the perfect solution. It wasn't. First thing I noticed was that the case seemed rather flimsy (It's cheap plastic). This had me a little worried about it's long term viability in my house.
After I put some batteries in it and started listening to a song, I realized that the quality of the playback at slower speeds was pretty poor. I've used several different programs on my computer (and have written some FFT programs myself) so I'm familair with audio signal processing and the method that they used produces sub optimal output. I don't know if they had limitations on the output since this is a hardware solution, but at the slower speeds, the sound is horrible and distorted to the point that it's impossible to actually hear the music. I should mention that this happened at 1/4 speed (which is slower than you would need for anything but speed metal solos). At half speed the sound quality was acceptable, but still not as good as you can get with some of the other software products out there.
Using the device itself was easy enough. After a couple of minutes I was able to set in and out points in the song and isolate different sections etc without a problem. The size was nice also, this is something that I could easily see taking with me on road trips, practice sessions, etc.
Overall, this product leaves a bit to be desired, but since it's really the only game in town, I have to rate it a little higher. I would like to see the case strengthened up a bit, and maybe add a feature to isolate different channels. Also, the AC adapter was extra when I bought mine, I would like to see that thrown in as well.
It should also be noted that I bought this when it first came out, and some of these issues may already have been addressed, so go to your local music store and look at one in person before deciding (or just take a chance that you might want to return it).Get more detail about TASCAM CDGT1 Portable CD Guitar Trainer.
Lowest Price eMedia Blues Guitar Legends Win/Mac
After downloading a trial version from [...] I decided to purchase the full copy. Being a beginner blues guitarist I have used plenty of DVD's and books to teach me the foundations (scales, chords, turnarounds, etc...). This program allows you to learn note for note the specific songs included on the CDrom. I love the virtual fretboard as it goes right along with the highlighted tablature!
This product gives some artist backgrounds and some interesting tips that will help you actually understand where the solo's come from, which I think is a great help for the beginner guitarist.
I love the fact that you can slow the music down as well as loop whaterever section(s) you chose.
Overall, for the novice that's trying to learn some fantastic songs this is definitely an awesome tool to learn with. Totally worth the money!Get more detail about eMedia Blues Guitar Legends Win/Mac.

Low Price Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 [Mac] [OLD VERSION]
When it arrived, I discovered I would have to add ram to my Mac mini.
Unfortunately, my Mac mini has not yet been expanded, so I haven't tried out the program yet.
Worse, there wasn't even a three-ring binder with any documentation to peruse, as you apparently have to print the docs out from a file on the DVD. When you open up the box, there is just a DVD in it.
Nevertheless, I am happy to have gotten the program, as I definitely will be needed Adobe compatibility, so I can rely on the PC compatibles my friends have.Get more detail about Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 [Mac] [OLD VERSION].
Save Apple Final Cut Studio (Mac DVD) [OLD VERSION]
This rather heavy box contains Final Cut Pro 5, Soundtrack Pro, Motion 2, DVD Studio Pro 4 & Shake 4 and lots and lots of books (my kind of packaging). My old Final Cut Pro 4 books have lots of places bookmarked with stickies. I know that you can use the help menu on the computer but for those of us who do like to curl up with a good manual I was in heaven. The box has a total of eight books. Five of them are for Final Cut Pro the others are for Motion 2, Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio Pro 4.
You have to invest both time and hard drive space for this software. I didn't install all of the extras that came in the box, but I did install quite a bit. To install all of the bells and whistles you would need about 41GB. I installed partial which used only 21GB which is still a hard drive hog.
While there were many great programs that came in the box I will only focus on Final Cut Pro 5.
What comes new for Final Cut Pro:
- "Multicamera Editing Using Multiclips". This allows you to group together multiple clips as separate angles and switch back and forth between the clips in real time. You can have up to 128 angles but only the first 16 can be played back in real time. This worked great for my multi-camera projects.
- You can now capture, edit and output native MPEG-2 HDV video plus 720p30, 720p60, 1080i60 & 1080i50 formats. Using supported USB or FireWire you can import and export native DV, DVCPRO & DVCPRO 50 footage from Panasonic P2 cards all without any generation loss.
- Apple Professional Application Integration has a new "Send to Menu" which allows you to select one or more clips in your project and open them in other Apple Pro applications such as Shake 4, Soundtrack Pro and Motion 2.
- You can embed Motion and LiveType projects directly into your Final Cut projects and edit them like any other clip in your timeline.
- You can also process audio in your Final Cut project using Soudtrack Pro by editing nondestructively or destructively using the Waveform Editor. When you make changes to Soundtrack audio that is embedded in a Final Cut project the audio in your Final Cut project is updated immediately.
- Interface Enhancements, allow you to now change the text display size in the Browser and Timeline. A new customized keyboard layout for real-time multicamera editing is also included. Plus new button bars for common workflows like Multiclip, Media Logging & Audio Editing.
- Rendering of "Still Images" & "Generator Performance" are now rendered to a "Constant Frames" folder which is stored in the current "Render Files" on your scratch disk which helps playback performance significantly.
- RT Extreme & Real-Time Playback: allows you to manually adjust the video quality (high, medium or low) and playback frame rate (full, half, quarter) to reduce CPU load so you can increase the number of simultaneous real-time effects.
Dynamic Real-Time Playback: Where Final Cut can automatically adjust video quality, frame rate or both on a frame-by-frame basis during playback thus allowing you to get the best real-time performance.
Limiting the Data Rate of Real-Time Playback: Is useful when you have more video streams that your hard disk is capable of playing back. This would be helpful to those who media is stored on a (SAN) storage area network or if your scratch disk has a low data rate, such as 4200 rpm which is the case with some PowerBooks and portable FireWire drives.
Unlimited Real-Time Playback Enhanced: If you choose the "Unlimited RT" option from the RT pop-menu in the Timeline you can preview more effects than previously available. The engine has been enhanced to support playback for effects that were previously unplayable, such as Motion & LiveType clips.
- Audio: MIDI Control Surface Support allows you to precisely control fader levels and pan settings simultaneously, instead of adjusting faders one at a time. You can control whether or not audio beeps are heard when unrendered audio tracks are played back.
- Log and Capture: You can now capture up to 24 audio channels at the same time. The Log & Capture window allows you to choose which audio channels you capture and whether audio channels are captured as mono channels or stereo pairs.
- Scratch Disks, Xsan & Network Support: The Directory & File Permission supports scratch disks on storage area networks such as Xsan. All UNIX file permissions are obeyed, allowing you to carefully control read & write access for multiple Final Cut Pro editing systems connected to the SAN.
Each time Final Cut is opened it searches any computers on your LAN for easy setups, plug-ins, window & keyboard layouts, button bars, etc... Which allows you to install settings and preset files in only one location and share them with all other editing systems on the network.
Capture Now no longer preallocates disk space so now media files grow as they are written and there is no longer a waiting period before Capture Now operation begins.
- Media Management: There is a faster reconnect feature to your media files. You can also reveal a clip's media file directly in the "Finder". The Media Manager can process the latest supported video formats, including DVCPRO, HD, HDV & IMX.
- Film Editing and Cinema Tools: Clips in Final Cut can be linked directly to a Cinema Tools database. So whenever you make changes to your Cinema Tools database you can update the associated clip in Final Cut.
You can import "Telecine Logs" directly into Final Cut and associate the clips with a Cinema Tools database that is created automatically. Final Cut Pro supports feet + frame units in the Timeline ruler and timecode fields throughout the application.
As with most programs today there are many ways of getting help. With Final Cut you can use the onscreen help menu or one of the 5 manuals that ships with the program. Personally I like to use the manuals.
The program itself has a bit of a learning curve. If you have used other editing programs before you will pick it up fairly quickly. I was a heavy PhotoShop user before I started using Final Cut and I noticed that many of the concepts are the same in how things are laid out and how there are many ways to get to the same point according to your work style.
The first book "Getting Started" is a great book for someone that has not used the program before. It gives great insight on the Post Production process and how to best keep your work flow efficient:
- Planning is the first thing you should do before you start shooting or at least before you start editing.
- Setting up your editing system should only have to happen once when you first start working on your project. For most systems today you just have to attach your video camera to your computer and you are ready. I have my system setup with my digital camera, connected to a dedicated TV which is attached to a stereo VCR/DVD combo.
- Logging, capturing & importing: This step is mostly style driven. Some people prefer to dump all of the material off their tapes onto their hard drive instead of going through the tape before hand and just "logging" in what you would like to have in your project. I usually go through my tapes in front of my TV with my laptop and get the time codes and make a description of the scene. Next "Capture" your footage. I just go to the in and out points and capture just the images I want. By just capturing what I want I save on hard drive space. You can also "Import" QuickTime movies, audio and graphics files, such as a music track from a CD, a still image, or a layered Photoshop file.
- Editing your project this also can vary according to your style. You can drag all of the clips into the Timeline then start cleaning them up and adding transitions or you can clean them up as you pull them in. Me I drag what I need into the Timeline, fine tune, add my music then add my transitions.
- Mixing & sweeting audio this is where you can clean up your dialogue (you know when the annoying plate clatter at that important point in a presentation), add sound effects, music or voiceover and make adjustments to the mixing levels to make a more harmonious sound to your audio. You can set Final Cut to default to Sound Track Pro for additional audio editing. I love working in Soundtrack Pro because I can view my project in a mini-screen as I add the music to the sections I want.
- Adding effects and titles can be very time consuming which is why it's a good idea to have most of your project laid out and almost done before you start adding the effects. You can change the speed of a clip, create a motion clip, adjust your colors and many other touches to give your project that polished feel of a professional.
- Outputting and distributing your project is your last step. Final Cut Pro provides you with a variety of output options. You can create a video tape or export it to a DVD authoring program such as DVD Studio Pro or another DVD program or you can make a mini movie and place it on the web.
When you open Final Cut for the first time you will be prompted to choose and "Easy Setup" which will determine how Final Cut works with your editing system. Go to "User Preferences" where there are six folder tabs to chose from. The first tab is "General" this is where you can setup the number of "Undo's" you would like (we all LOVE undo) how many "Recent Clips" you would like to be displayed, setup your "Real-time Audio mixes, how often you would like to have a copy "Auto Save" and many other things that affect the general feel of your workspace.
Editing is the next tab: This tab handles the "Still/Freeze Duration", "Dupe Detection" and other audio warnings.
Labels is the next tab: It has five different color blocks which show Orange-Good Take, Red-Best Take, Aqua Blue-Alternate Shots, Lilac-Interviews and Lime Green-B Roll.
Timeline Options: is the next tab which has your starting Timecode, Track Size, which gives you the choices of "Reduced, Small, Medium & Large", You can set the Default # of Video & Audio tracks, Change your Thumbnail Display from "Name, Name Plus Thumbnail or Filmstrip and how you want your Audio Track Labels to Appear "Paired or Sequential". You can also control "Your Track Display" by having different things shown and what appears in your "Clip Keyframes".
Next is Render & Playback tab: where you set the Filters, Frame Blending for Speed, Motion Blur and how you want the Frame Rate or Resolution Rendered @ 100% or less.
Last tab is the Audio Outputs tab which is set at the Default Stereo Preset. You can "Duplicate, Edit or Delete" presets according to the project you are working on.
Next setup your "System Settings" This is where you setup your "Scratch Disks," for your Video & Audio Capture to include Video & Audio Render. Setup your "Waveform & Thumbnail Cache" plus your "Autosave Vault. Setup your "Minimum Allowable Free Space on Scratch Disks, Limit Capture/Export File Segment and the length of time for your "Limit Capture Now." (A note about scratch disks if you do a lot of editing on different projects and you would like to keep your files separate from your other projects you will have to reset this for every new project.) When I first started using Final Cut 4 I didn't and my files were everywhere. I like to have all of my files from a particular project in the same folder so I make sure that my render files and other cache files all get saved in the same folder. Some have said that this may slow down a project I haven't seen that in any of my edits. Again this is a personal choice.
Audio/Video Settings is the next thing to setup:
There are five tabs under this section the "Summary" where you setup your Sequence Preset which determines the "Editing Timebase for a sequence. (A sequence is a container for editing clips together in a chronological order. This process involves deciding which video and audio clip items to put in your sequence and what order the clips should go in.) Once a sequence is created, its editing Timebase can only be changed if in it contains no clips.
Capture Presets tells you what preset you are working in like DV NTSC 48 kHz it gives you warnings if your device is missing, what quality you have it set to like Best Quality, the Bits Per Pixel, what type of Input if its coming off the first two channels, if the speaker is On or Off and what's the volume set at and if there is any gain.
Device Control Preset tells you what Protocol you are using such as Apple Firewire, the Time Source such as DV Time, the Frame Rate, the Pre and Post Roll which is about 3 seconds, the Capture Offset, the Handle Size and Playback Offset.
Video and Audio Devices tells you your Playback Output what your audio is set to and gives you different Output for Edit to Tape/Print to Video. You can also check or uncheck for Final Cut to alert you if your External A/V device is not connected when it launches.
You can change these settings at anytime as you get more familiar with the program and according to your work habits. Also bear in mind any changes you make while you are working in an opened project will affect only future sequences to make changes to the current project you will need to use the "Sequence Settings Command".
There are four main windows in Final Cut that you use to edit your project:
- You have the "Browser" where you organize your clips, import music and graphics. You can view items in the "Browser" in list view or icon view. List view provides detail clip information in columns while icon view gives the first frame of your clip or the "In" point of the clip. You can either make the icon display small, medium or large, large tends to work best with 20 inch or greater monitors.
- The "Viewer" is where you preview and prepare your clips for editing. You can define "In" and "Out" edit points for clips, adjust the audio levels and panning, add filters and adjust filters applied to the clip. Adjust the motion parameters in your clip to modify or animate such parameters as scale, rotation, cropping and opacity. You can also adjust transitions such as a dissolve or a wipe or page turn from an edited sequence.
- The "Canvas" is where you view your edited sequence as well as perform a variety of editing functions like straightening out that slightly off kilter clip, or slow panning and zooming in on your clip, the Canvas works in parallel to the Timeline it displays the current position in an open sequence.
- Next you have the "Timeline" which displays the clips in your sequence. The "Timeline" shows the chronological arrangement of clips and layered video and audio items, while the Canvas provides a single view that allows you to watch your sequence just as it will appear on a movie or TV screen.
The last two small windows are the "Audio Meters" which allow you to monitor the audio levels and the "Tool palette" which contains the tools for selecting, navigating, performing edits and manipulating items.
You can of course setup this workspace the way you work best and save it for future projects.
A quick glance at how hard volumes are broken down:
Volume 1-Covers the Interface, Setup & Input for Final Cut: It explains the basics of the Final Cut interface and the elements of a project, it also provides instructions on setting up your editing system, capturing footage to your computer and importing files.
Volume 2-Editing: Discusses each part of the video process, including organizing your footage, creating a rough edit, fine-tuning your edit using advance trimming techniques. It also includes the instructions for multicamera editing using the new multicamera editing tools.
Volume 3-Audio Mixing and Effects: Provides instructions for mixing audio and enhancing your video using the effects of Final Cut Pro such as adding transitions, filters, creating motion effects, composting & layering, creating titles and color correcting your footage. It also covers real-time playback and rendering.
Volume 4-Media Management and Output: Gives information about managing projects and media files, exchanging projects between editing systems and outputting completed projects. It also contains detailed explanations of settings and preferences and information on video formats, frame rate and timecode. Vol. 4 also contains the index for all of the other volumes. It directs you to what volume contains the information that you are seeking.
There is an interactive DVD tutorial include in the package. It gives an excellent overview of Final Cut Pro 5, Motion 2, Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio Pro 4. The tutorials take you through the applications interfaces and primary features. There are lesson files and media included on the DVD so you can learn as you go. The DVD's are equivalent to eight hours of training in PDF format. There are tutorials for both beginners and more advanced users.
One very important note when using this program and any other program is to Save, Save, Save and did I mention Save. While the program does do an "Auto Save" I like to save about every 15 minutes or so, or if I just made some major changes. There have been times when the program will not like something and suddenly just quit. After having to rebuild two rather large projects I now save religiously.
Every time I use this program I learn something new. With the new changes in the program my work is becoming more streamlined and creative. My projects are maturing the more I use Final Cut. I am also noticing that I am able to put together a project faster each time and that each project comes out with something new.

Discount Apple GarageBand Jam Pack 4: Symphony Orchestra (Mac)
This took up a lot of hard drive space, but it is worth it. The orchestra loops are amazing and have really augmented my work. I am running a G4 processor, and my only negative is that this, more than any of the other Packs really works the chip. Cheapest Native Instruments Kontakt 3 Software Sampler
as other people said here and as most people know, Kontakt is an amazing instrument. With bad customer support. I especially like version 3, it has a neater interface and the sounds and possibilities are so many. However, customer support is very bad, I was installing the libraries by directly coping them on the HD, and I could not get Kontakt to load the sounds even though it located all the libraries. Customer support blowed me off by simply saying that they don't offer support unless I install with the installer. Which basically meant I had wasted many hours away and I had to install everything from scratch. What they said would make sense, were it not for the fact that with a 33 gb library, they should do a better job and allow for the libraries to be copied directly onto the HD without all this dumb installer business. What's the problem with that? None, the customer would save a lot of time and be able to install the libraries a bit at a time and however he think fit. Eastwest libraries allow the user to do just that, and it's a far easier and simple process.
Writing many times to Native Instruments customer support was just useless, the only time they care to save is theirs, not yours.Get more detail about Native Instruments Kontakt 3 Software Sampler.

Buying PhotoStudio Expressions
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT PURCHASE THIS SOFTWARE. I have been trying for DAYS to complete just one DVD slideshow of photos and it still will not work. Every time the slideshow gets to the fourth slide, it quits working and says there has been error and the program needs to close. IT IS SO FRUSTRATING and such a waste.
Not to mention the fact that I just bought this software from Staples for $40 and now see it here on Amazon.com for just ten bucks. WHAT A RIP OFF. It doesn't work anyway so even $10 would be a waste of money for this junk.Get more detail about PhotoStudio Expressions.
