Jorgen Aase is the programmer behind EnergyXT, and it's an amazing piece of work. I started using it back in 2004 when it was still version 1. It was my favorite platform for quickly building music and trying out ideas. I love the modular view. If you want to try out a new VST, the modular view in EnergyXT makes it faster and easier to patch it in and get it up and running that any other platform I know of.

I'm impressed by the synthesizer and guitar amp in version 2. They both sound great and are very efficient with the cpu. If you have an older computer, EnergyXT is the way to go. I've got it running on an MSI wind netbook (using the Indamixx linux software) and it runs great. I can play my guitar through EnergyXT's amp and effects with 6ms latency on an atom processor!

EnergyXT's biggest weakness is live performance. It doesn't offer anything like the session view in Ableton Live that allows you to mix and match clips and loops on the fly. It's best for recording and arranging songs. You can jam to the drum machine, and then easily go back and cut and paste the parts you like. It's about as straightforward as DAWs get.

I can't speak to any advantages in the plus version, since I don't use Rewire. For the standard version, you can save a significant amount of money by downloading it direct from the energyXT website.

I paid $50 for my license in 2004, and I haven't been charged for any upgrade since. Reason is a awsome way get a professional sound from your synth music quick. It includes some of the best sounds, synth, samples, and effects there are. The midi recording and automation options are exellent. You can self-contain your files, export to 24-bit or 16-bit audio, export as a midi, or publish the file for sharing. It is also compatible with tons of different midi keyboards.

Cons:
Not much is compatible with the program plugin wise. The instruments you get with the program is all you get. The Real Time effects while great quailty are not vast. And as far as i know any sort of plugin cost way too much. Most the refills are either extremely wack or a little too expensive. Importing audio can only be done in a sampler so if your audio file is long you have to restart from the beginning to hear it (not real time).

hey,

i am just writing to try to sell you on piano wizard, which i mentioned to you once over the summer.
i had one delivered to us in switzerland after our trip and **** (my 4-yr old kid) has learned a lot from this game.
i could imagine getting one for ***(her 4-yr old kid) for christmas.
but i would need to hear your feelings about it first.
you can learn a lot about it by looking at [...]
for us, it really has been a fun and easy way for **** (my 4-yr old kid) to learn piano.
here are some extra info for you to know about...

what she learned in just 8 weeks...
1. the first 2 songs used one octave of black keys. she learned to play 3 notes with her right hand and 2 with the left.
2. next few songs used different parts of the keyboard but still black keys only
3. next few songs introduced chords (left hand ocasionally playing 1 note at same time as right hand)
4. next few songs introduced hand movement (so she has to move one hand or the other to a new position)
5. next few songs introduced her to playing on the white keys. (much harder because you can not feel them as easily)
there are 88 songs left to go in the training set and i was easily able to load up a song of my choosing (yesterday by the beatles) after downloading an mdi file from the internet (similar to mp3 file)

at some point i switched her to level 2, where notes are going horizontally instead of vertically. this is a major step, but it is manageable. i think it constitutes huge progress on the path to reading music in standard notation.

i think some piano instruction does not introduce rhythm in the beginning, but of course this design makes it impossible to play out of rhythm (the keys are silent unless you press the one that is correct for the given moment of the song)

so, i generally think this is one of the coolest things i ever bought in my life.

however, in all honesty, there are a few cautions i should mention.

1. i can not walk away for more than 90 seconds while she is practicing. a few clicks are needed to set the tempo and select the song and after about 90 seconds it is usually time to do another mouse click on something so i am always needed to be there.

2. a large tv monitor might be needed. we somehow had a large tv/monitor that was not in use, so i arranged a dedicated space for her keyboard to be directly facing this large screen. if you use a tiny monitor or or a large monitor that is too far away, it might not be such a great experience. (and putting the keyboard up on your desk would not be correct hand positioning.)

3. before we did piano lessons in the morning, i tried to teach **** (my 4-yr old kid) about telling time. we used a kumon workbook every morning for 20 minutes and she really hated it. now, i tell her every morning... "are you ready for a fun lesson? do you prefer to practice piano? or clocks?" well, she happily chooses piano and feels lucky to get to do that. the constant threat of showing her some clocks again is really boosting her enthusiasm for piano. without this, i am not sure she would be so thrilled. (sorry to diss kumon here because i like them in gneral. but putting a 4-yr old in front of any age-7 workbook is going to be punishment)

so,.. you should check the web site and decide if you are a believer or not, if someone would have time to do this with ***(her 4-yr old kid) or not, and if you have space for a monitor or not.

First let me say, this program did make everything relatively easy for me. I was up and going in little time, and the book does a pretty good job of helping you out. But then I learned of the software's largest, almost unforgiveable problem. No support for the ability to add instrument definitions!... What is an instrument definition? It is sort of like a computer driver, you add it into the program so that the software recognizes (communicates) with all of the sound banks (beyond general midi) on your instrument. I was INCREDIBLY frustrated to learn, after much searching, and waiting several days for a reply from Cakewalk's tech support, to learn this fact, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE MANUAL SAYS YOU CAN DO IT!!, it even gives you directions how. So for the time being (until I can save money for one of the better programs) I can ONLY use boring old general midi, making 5/6th's of my synth's sound bank useless.

Unlike the previous reviewer, when I upgraded my version 3 Gold bundle last year to version 6 I only had to pay $199. The upgrade fee also included Rennaissance Maxx, and today I'm using version 7 without any additional expense on my part.
I have plugins from other developers, but often come back to using Waves. For me they have been relatively easy to use, with good sound quality, and not too taxing on my computer (G5 Dual 2 GHz PPC).

Back when I purchased version 3 it came with many printed manuals. It really helps to read them in order to take advantage of the software's capabilities. These days PDF versions are included. With approximately 25 included plugins its a good idea to become familiar with the Waves interface and operation, since this knowledge (e.g., A/B, copy, paste, presets, fine adjustments, etc.) perhaps applies to every included plugin.

The bundle includes a couple of reverbs, delays, compressors, equalizers, an analyzer, and more. I hate that it requires an iLok, and the initial price for Waves plugins can be expensive. Still, the upgrade is capped at $200 and it includes any additional plugins added to the bundle.

BBE Sonic Maximizer Plugin Software Review

PROS:
I use this baby in almost any piece of audio software I own (Ableton Live 7, Sonar 7, Pro Tools, Sound Forge, CD Architect, Fruity Loops, etc...). It's a great plug-in adding clarity, deepness, or both in a hot second! Don't mistake this for replacing good use of EQ though! When used properly, in addition to good mixing, it will add brilliance and life to your music! What's also nice about having this software plug-in as opposed to the hardware version, is that you virtually have an unlimited supply of this "rackmount gear" to put on as many tracks as you want, at a much lesser cost! Up to as many as your computer can handle. Instead of buying 1 piece of hardware, and recording through, or even re-recording all your tracks through that 1 piece, it's like having a whole room full of Sonic Maximizers ready to have individual, or even multiple signals pass thru them and all ready to be maximized. Think of the hassle with hardware...If you want the clarity or deepness the hardware provides, then you have to either record, or re-record thru it with possibly different settings for each part of the song to get your desired result! And while you're tinkering with those settings for each take, don't forget to keep track of those settings for all your previous takes that you think you want to keep for now...You may have recreate that same sound if have to come back to one of those takes later...YEAH RIGHT! Jot it all down with pen and paper?! Heck even using Windows notepad is too much for folks like me! Activate this plug-in on any track you want, set it and move on, saving you time and energy! If you don't like how it sounds later, come back and readjust until you do. Simple! No re-recording, no notepad, no paper and pencil! Most of all, programs like Pro Tools or Ableton let you save the settings should you need to load them later! Can hardware do that? I don't think so! All in all, less time fiddling with gear, more time making music!

Cons: (The reason I only gave it 4 stars)
If you haven't figured out by now, my main DAW is Pro Tools, so when I installed this plug-in I noticed that Pro Tools would blast this really loud distorted noise almost every time I opened the projects it was used on. It was like the snow sound on TV with less low end, played at 60+ dB and louder. (Yeah imagine my surprise the first time I heard that in the headphones...I almost had to clean the seat I was sitting in!) This would happen for anywhere from 5-10 seconds and then it would stop, and all was fine again. So I have learned to open my projects with the headphones and monitors turned all the way down or off. Even then you still faintly hear it since it is so loud. That's how I know when it stops and to turn everything back up again LOL! Also, if you use this on an audio track, as opposed to a send or bus track, it seems that the output of the plug-in will boost the gain of that track, instead of just leaving the track at the same level. Just a little annoying sometimes to have to go back to readjust the level of the track to keep your mix the way you want it.

Anyway, it plays well with all the other software I mentioned above. I haven't noticed the loud blasting distortion problem on any other program but Pro Tools, and anyone who has used Pro Tools knows that Pro Tools has its own quirks at times. Since I have the VST wrapper by FXpansion, maybe I'll uninstall the RTAS version and wrap the VST version to work in Pro Tools, and see if that gets rid of my loud distortion problem! Roxio Crunch Win/Mac Top Quality

This product is too slow to run on a normal PC with Windows XP. The processor usage goes to 100% or the PC crashes. I have tried several PCs with lots of memory and with no other applications running. But... still the PC crashes. I contacted Roxio tech-support. They opened a trouble ticket but then closed it without resolving the issue. Further communications to Roxio have resulted in no replies. So... do not buy this application. Go to WinX DVD and evaluate their solutions. These solutions are more reasonably priced and in fact deliver the promised features. The definition of quality is... it does what it is supposed to do. Roxio Easy Media Creator 8.0 [OLD VERSION] This instant

Back when I had the Dell Dimension 4550 the situations happened in the short-term...

The only program that worked fine in version 8 was Creator Classic, which has rarely had problems for me in the past (sometimes crashed Windows 98 SE with version 5, but that was acceptable back in the day of FAT32).

Don't update this program because the update caused Windows XP Professional with SP2 to run very slowly as if it were malware, but possibly the patch had a bug serious enough that plagues programs like Nero 7 and later. (Nero 7 when it first released caused a BSoD after uninstallation, and glad that I tried that via a trial download.)

I use Roxio Toast 8, 9, and 10 without trouble (at least as far as the basics of backing up data).

DVD Builder program in this version 8 was horrible as well - audio out of sync with slide shows, and most annoying of all, very difficult to edit text in the menus with the finicky solid bars that were hard to move. It was very slow and unstable, crashing often. Same problem with version 7, and to avoid corruption, it somehow helps not installing content from the other disc, so when you need the content, insert the disc. I think this might be a Windows indexing issue that causes the corruption, but I have not done thorough research.

Note that I last used the program when it first came out and have not used it since. Many reviews here on Amazon are negative on Roxio Creator and Nero as far as newer versions. I agree, Nero 6 was as good as Roxio 7 (the PC version), and I'd say that how things have been going with these products, it's looking unlikely any future version would be as smooth sailing.

Hope this helps. Keep in mind that Roxio and Ulead products containing the DivX codec may conflict with Nero (I see that Nero and Roxio are as strong competitors as they have compatibility problems, go figure), and cause video thumbnail errors, freezing Windows Explorer. Has happened twice, and hope it doesn't happen, unless you know which codec is causing the problem under Windows Device Manager.

I use a Mac now with Parallels Desktop, and won't even try burning. Besides, Roxio Toast refuses to burn data from a virtual drive.

Not recommended - and don't try Roxio 8 on Vista, and don't feel comfortable with Vista. Looks as others have had the 'certificate error' and 'installation rollback' problem as I did. Hopefully Windows 7 will bring better support.Get more detail about Roxio Easy Media Creator 8.0 [OLD VERSION].

I must agree with a previous reviewer that I was highly disappointed to open the box and not see the keyboard in the online ad. The keyboard in the ad is, I believe, the 49i keyboard which had a few more bells and whistles than the one in the box. I am normally 100% satisfied with Amazon, but on this occasion I'm about 65%.
