This is more than just a book - it's a (14 day or less) course with 5 CD's of session files. The author has an excellent sense of keeping instruments & vocals in their own "space" not just by volume & panning, but by means of EQ & FX. Similar to ideas in David Gibson's mixing books.
BTW - Had some trouble with the files in my Sonar 6 producer - not getting all the console settings. Had several emails between the author and Waves (I am a registered Waves V6 owner). Waves Tech support stated "...please note that the book was intended to be used with Waves V5 under Sonar 3 (using DirectX), Waves supports Sonar 6 with Waves V6 under VST, therefore the sessions in the book are not designed to work in V6 and you may have issues, Also some files mentioned in the book did not make it to the DVDs. At this point there are no new updates to include the preset files, although we have a PDF file "Update-and-Errata" located in the Multi-Track OpenMix session DVD to better explain the presets."
Also the Mastering presets were missing - but the pictures allowed me to re-construct these. Several volume, panning and fx send settings were missing - but weren't enough to interfere with the teaching of mixing and mastering.
I give the author 5 stars, but Waves 3 stars (for not keeping the DVDs current and the V4 software from the book trying to lockout my own V6 plugins) - overall 4 stars. Still worth the time & investment.Get more detail about Production Mixing Mastering 4th Edition (Book).
