Kana ~Little Sister~, or Kana ~Imouto~, is a visual novel that shook the foundations of the medium when released. Even now, it brings people that would otherwise scoff, laugh, or grin sheepishly at the concept of an erotic anime-art "dating sim" to tears and apologies.
Though still a step below the artistry of Key's masterworks Kanon, Air, and CLANNAD, Kana is widely considered the best visual novel officially translated into the English language. Like in a classic novel, the characters grow not only by our slow introduction to them, but also by the plot that pulls the story ever forward and the overarching, inevitable sense of doom awaiting at the emotional conclusion. Other reviewers have written many odes to the emotional effect Kana has on its fortunate reader: some as outrageous as the proposition of a spike in suicides amongst young Japanese men shortly after Kana's release, or that, if Hitler owned a copy, he would have become a surgeon and donated his kidney to the Jewish nation. While outlandish and humorous, I highly suspect that the reviewers in question needed a bit of comic relief after finishing Kana - a word of warning, this story is not for those who dislike sad endings.
The art is odd at first, when viewed by one attuned to the style of modern anime; the style quickly "grows on you", so to speak. I believe that the original art is far superior to the art of Kana... Okaeri!, the updated edition which was originally intended to be an XBOX release.
The music, particularly the three vocal themes, is a positive experience overall, if not breathtaking. Some of the more heavily used and more obviously synth tracks (all music is synth except the vocal themes) become annoying, as is the case in most visual novels. The composition, however, is good, and the matching of music to story is well-done. There is no voice acting in the original Kana ~Little Sister~ game sold by G-Collections, Princess Peach, etc.
The story is top-notch, despite the fact that ("despite" should be read as "especially due to") it makes you cry from here to Kansas City. If you live near Kansas City, rewrite that to Toronto. A thought-experiment about what death really is, what we need to do to prepare ourselves for death, and what it really means to live - in that surprising order - Kana ~Little Sister~ turns your heart and soul upside down before ripping them both out. Just don't stop reading it.
The pornographic content is too graphic to allow the work to be enjoyed by those disturbed by an occasional graphic, fantastic (in the sense of fantasy) sex scene, yet the sex is infrequent enough to disinterest someone solely looking for such an erotic stimulus. This poor balance is the most negative aspect of the game, in my opinion. Both the hentai-seeking and story-seeking zealots will be disappointed and disturbed, respectively. Only those looking for one and tolerant (appreciative?) of the other will fully enjoy Kana ~Little Sister~.
